Legislative Internship

**Please note  that the deadline for 2004-05 academic year has passed.

What :  Earn a $2000 Stipend for Graduate Students and 3 credit hours per semester.

Experience a semester (or two) working at the Hawaii State Legislative Reference Bureau (LRB) on area(s) of interest and experience/learn first-hand how policy evolves at the Capitol.  

Internship experience includes 16 hours per week working with professionals to conduct hands-on research and analysis of public policy issues and drafting memos and reports of recommendations to policymakers and others.   Students can become involved in a number of diverse topics as: child protective services; family court issues; criminal history checks; solid waste management permitting issues; commercial leasehold issues; impact of “big box” retailers; outsourcing call centers; long term care issues; special purpose revenue bonds for schools; charter schools; criminal history checks; and much more.

Faculty Advisors and Faculty-Intern Seminars will actively enable interns to integrate the experience with the academic curriculum

Stipend ($2,000) and 3 academic credit hours (450 hours) per semester will be available for Fall and Spring Semesters

Options available for student experiences for one or two semesters

Who is Eligible :

•  Students admitted to a UH graduate program in the CSS or related fields and interested in a legislative experience in public policy and public administration issues

•  Students who have research and analytic skills, strong writing ability, and communication skills

•  Each Applicant must submit the following before APRIL 30 2004:

•  Application form (form available from Public Administration Office at Saunders Hall Rm 631

•  Personal education and goal statement of applicant's interests and expectations for the legislative experience (not to exceed one page)

•  One letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with applicant's academic work

•    A short writing sample demonstrating applicant's analytic and writing abilities.
